We at Wave like to be different, we would say we have a relaxed attitude to most things and welcome everyone. We love training but aren't afraid to let our hair down, or so we thought. Then came Kurt.
If you have seen Kurt's YouTube channel you will know him for his foul language and non PC approach to teaching techniques. His grizzled appearance, broken fingers and flipping the bird at every opportunity go against the traditions set out by other academies, but are a refreshing counter to the sometimes unnaturally sanitised appearance of most instructors.
Kurts seminar was a detailed look at his omoplata set up with "what ifs" answered as much as the time allowed. There was a set up for the basic omoplata from lapel and sleeve with feet on the hips, then a counter to a counter ending in a cross collar choke, from there we went back to a kneeling sweep from omoplata control position that ended with Kimura, American and "Faggot" control A.K.A. a wrist lock, lots of colourful terminology given with a tongue in cheek knowingness that would only pass with a man of his stature and life experiences. He walked around and helped everyone without skipping a beat.
After the seminar, we took Wave to a Chiswick "dive" pub (for Chiswick that is). He entertained us with stories and we all had a deeper respect for this guy we had all only seen on some crazy YouTube videos.
All in all it was one of the best seminars we had, the techniques were good sure, but it was more then that. We love larger than life characters, we also have a certain respect for hard living people who don't fit the norms of this art or even life in general.
Thank you Kurt for visiting our gym and being yourself. We wish you luck with your future endevours and hope you make it back over again. In the meantime to everyone else, as Kurt would say go train!
