The Beginners Guide to WaveBJJ

What should I wear for my first class?

For your first class you have to bring a t-shirt, tracksuit bottoms and flip flops (if you don't have flip flops you can wear shoes when not on the mats).

Will you lend me a gi (uniform) for my first class?

We will try, unless we do not have your size or have been lazy with the laundry.  We will lend you a nice clean gi as well as a belt which we will teach you to tie.

What will I do on my first class?

On your first class you will learn the basic movements for the warm up, then you will take part in the class and we will get you started at your own pace.  You are free to sit out of parts you aren't yet comfortable with and are fully in control of your class all through your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey.  We are a relaxed bunch and everyone will be happy to help get you started and help you through the main techniques and positions.

What if I have more questions?

Feel free to tap on the instructors shoulder and ask away, we are there to help you and get you started in this great martial art or you can send questions here

I have to leave early/coming late?

That is also fine, we live in London and it is a busy city with a lot going on.  We recommend coming for the warm up though as this will prevent unnecessary injuries and help with your mobility.

Do I need to wear flip flops?

Yes they are compulsory when off the mats, you must not walk around off the mats barefoot (unless you are wearing "barefoot" flip flops/shoes If you don't have any you can buy flip flops here

Do I have to wash my gi after every class?

Yes as the gi's get very sweaty and must be washed after every class.  We recommend washing them at 30C with some antibacterial powder.

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? (Answer unashamedly copied from Wikipedia :)  )

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a martial art, combat sport system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. Brazilian jiu-jitsu was formed from Kodokan judo ground fighting (newaza) fundamentals that were taught by a number of individuals including Takeo Yano, Mitsuyo Maeda and Soshihiro Satake. Brazilian jiu-jitsu eventually came to be its own art through the experiments, practices, and adaptation of judo through Carlos and Helio Gracie (who passed their knowledge on to their extended family) as well as other instructors who were students of Maeda,

Which books do you recommend? (click on book title for amazon.co.uk weblink)

The book I always recommend is Jiu Jitsu University by Saulo Ribeiro great book with all the fundamental techniques

What sites do you recommend I check out? (click on website name for weblink)

Grapple Arts is a good resource that I used when I was starting out

How does grading work?

You can read our blog post for a guide to how we grade HERE Grading is measured on a lot of factors including skill, attendance, competitions and other factors.  It is a long road in BJJ with the average person taking 10 years to black belt and then only at most 10% of people who make it to black belt.  This is definitely an enjoy the journey kind of art :)
